Understanding Dental Implants

Each of your teeth has a root and a crown. Interestingly, dental implants do as well. The crown is the visible part used to chew, and the root keeps the tooth in place under the gum and is anchored into an individual’s jaw. However, there is an essential difference between natural teeth and dental implants. Dental implants are made of titanium, which is what surgeons use for artificial joints. When a tooth is lost, the root and the crown are entirely gone. To successfully replace the tooth, we need to address the missing root first and put in a dental implant.

Once the dental implant is in place, time is needed so that the bone can heal and grow around it. During this time, the bone begins to bond with the titanium. In turn, this helps to establish a durable foundation for artificial teeth. After this, an abutment, also known as a support post, is put on the implant. Notably, the new replacement tooth, or crown, is placed on top of the abutment, completing the process.

There are many times where a temporary replacement tooth may be immediately attached to the implant. If several or all of your teeth need to be replaced, there are multiple treatment options that will adequately support the replacement teeth.

Dr. Fried and Dr. Levine are up to date with the latest surgical advancements that have been made in dental implant technology and can place single-stage implants.

  •  Although these implants do not need a second procedure to uncover them, they will need at least 3 months to heal before the artificial teeth are put in place.
  •  Under the right set of circumstances, the implant may be placed while the tooth is extracted, eliminating the need for another surgery.
  •  Dr. Fried or Dr. Levine will conduct the implant surgery and tooth extractions. If needed, they will also perform bone grafting.

All-on-Four Dental Implants

Rather than a single dental implant for each lost tooth, we can now implant entire, implant-supported dentures with four implants on the top and four on the bottom. Even in specific locations, we can place a denture.

The cost of All-On-4® dental implants varies based on the material used, the number of lost teeth you need to replace, and your dental insurance coverage. An acrylic denture is created around a titanium framework with the typical All-On-4 dental implants option. A denture like this can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $30,000. The procedure may cost more if you visit more than one dentist.

It can be intimidating to get a dental implant for the first time. You may be concerned about discomfort and uncertainty due to receiving dental implants. Obtaining All-On-4 dental implants is a four-step procedure:

  • Our dental implant specialist will ensure that you are relaxed and comfortable by administering sedation dentistry.
  • We will prepare your mouth for dental implants by extracting any failing teeth from your jaws and gums and any unhealthy or damaged tissue.
  • The titanium screws will be inserted into your jawbone to begin the procedure. We will usually insert two implants in the front of your mouth and two in the back so that the biting force placed on the dentures is evenly distributed.
  • Following the placement of the dental implants, we will clean the surgical areas carefully and repair the incisions. You’ll then be taken to a recovery room to relax and recover from your sedation.

Frequently Asked Dental Implant Questions we hear from our patients in the Princeton, NJ area:

1. What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that provide a permanent base for fixed or removable replacement teeth. They are made of titanium and are surgically placed into the jawbone.

2. What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer several benefits, including replaced teeth that look natural, improved speech and self-esteem and confidence to help you navigate through life. Dental Implants can also help to preserve your jawbone, which can prevent bone loss and aging. Many of our patients throughout the Princeton area love to hear the benefits of dental implants, and this also helps with their decision making.

3. How long does the dental implant procedure take?

The length of the dental implant procedure can vary depending on the number of teeth being replaced and the type of implant being used. The surgical placement of the dental implant can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, and the healing process can take several months.

4. What can I expect during the healing process?

During the healing process, the implant will fuse to the jawbone, a process called osseointegration. This can take several months and during this time, patients may experience some discomfort and swelling. The final restoration, such as a crown or bridge, will be placed once the dental implant has fully integrated with the jawbone.

5. Are there any risks or complications associated with dental implants?

As with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of infection and bleeding. There is also a small risk of nerve damage and implant failure. However, with proper care and maintenance, the risk of complications is minimal. Our Princeton dental implant specialists have an extremely high success rate and years of experience, so you’re in good hands.

6. How do I care for my dental implants?

Dental implants require the same care as your natural teeth, including regular brushing and flossing, and routine dental check-ups. It is also important to avoid habits that can damage the implant, such as biting on hard objects or using tobacco products.

7. Are dental implants covered by insurance?

Dental implants may be covered by your insurance, but it depends on the specific plan and the reason for the implant. It’s best to check with your insurance provider to see what is covered under your plan.

8. How much do dental implants cost?

The cost of dental implants can vary depending on a number of factors such as the number of teeth being replaced, the location of the dental implant, and the type of implant being used. On an average, the cost of a single tooth implant can range from $1,500 to $6,000.

9. How long will dental implants last?

Dental implants can last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance. The implant itself may never need to be replaced, but the restoration (crown, dental bridge, etc.) may need to be replaced over time if it is not cared for properly.

10. I don’t reside in Princeton, NJ, can I still become a dental implant patient?

Yes, we welcome patients from Rocky Hill, Lawrenceville, Mount Rose, Plainsboro, Rosedale, Hopewell, South Brunswick, and the surrounding areas.
